A ceiling fan can bring comfort to a room. This guide will walk you through installing a ceiling fan with a downrod.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ladder
  • Power screwdriver
  • Tools recommended by your instructions
  1. Step 1

The mounting bracket should be installed to the workbox already in the ceiling.

  2. Step 2

Install the downrod into the mount with the ball end toward the ceiling.

  3. Step 3

Thread the lead wires from the motor through the canopy and the downrod. Be careful not to pull on electrical wires.

  4. Step 4

Insert the downrod into the collar yoke and rotate it until the holes match up. Insert the connector pin through the holes, and then secure it with a cotter pin. Be careful not to damage or cut the fan wires.

  5. Step 5

Bend the two legs of the cotter pin to ensure that the connector pin does not slip out.

  6. Step 6

Attach the hanger and downrod to the motor by tightening the screw on the side of the downrod.

  7. Step 7

Insert the ball into the hanger bracket. The tab opposite the hanger-bracket opening should fit into the slot on the ball.

  8. Step 8

Connect the wires as directed in your instruction manual.

  9. Step 9

Slide the canopy up the hanger bracket and permanently attach it with the supplied screws.

  10. Step 10

Have an electrician check your work if possible before turning power back on.
