Recessed lighting can update the look of a room and provide lighting to key areas such as a countertop or desk. To keep your circuit from overloading, check the wiring before you install new fixtures to make sure the circuit can handle the load. If it cannot, have an electrician update the wiring to accommodate your electrical needs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Determine the wattage used by your existing fixture. If your fixture uses four 100-watt bulbs, then you can safely install lighting for up to 400 watts.
Step2
If this meets your needs, continue as planned. If you require more power, check with an electrician to see if more watts will overload your circuit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not blindly install lighting and hope for the best. You may suffer electrical damage and may even cause a dangerous explosion or fire.
