Wireless intercom systems allow known visitors in while keeping uninvited strangers out. While installation is quick and easy, you must first determine if a wireless intercom system will work in your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a system that can expand if necessary. While three intercoms may be enough when you first install the unit, you may find you want more stations as you become accustomed to using the system.

  2. Step 2

Calculate the range needed. The signal must travel between the master station and the intercom stations. Some systems offer just 500 feet, others offer up to 2000 feet. Keep in mind that these are measured in a straight, uninterrupted line. Calculate one foot of range for every six inches of wall thickness and two feet for every six inches of floor or ceiling the intercom frequency must pass through.

  3. Step 3

Experiment with various placements of intercom stations and the master station. Each station will require a nearby AC outlet.

  4. Step 4

Consider the number of channels you might need.
