The lighting in your bathroom must serve several purposes, from general lighting overall to adjustable lighting around your makeup mirror. Recessed lighting can address these needs. Here's how to choose a model that will work in your bathroom.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Decide Where You Need Light in your Bathroom

  1. Step 1

Study your bathroom at different times of the day and night to decide where you need to place lights.

  2. Step 2

Decide whether to use recessed lights only or a mix of recessed and other types of lighting.

  3. Step 3

Plan for recessed lights above the shower stall or tub to prevent accidents due to insufficient light.

  4. Step 4

Place recessed lights directly above the mirror or over the counter at vanity areas.

  5. Step 5

Use eyeball lights around the vanity to focus on your face and prevent shadows and glare.

  6. Step 6

Use focused lights to accent wall décor, if desired.

  7. Choose Your Lights

  8. Step 1

Choose closed housings to prevent moisture from damaging the lights or causing a fire hazard.

  9. Step 2

Decide between fluorescent, HID and incandescent lights.

  10. Step 3

Choose trim to coordinate with the ceilings and the rest of the room.

Tips & Warnings
  • Halogen or HID lights provide bright, clean light that’s perfect for task lighting around the vanity area.
  • Always use IC (insulation contact) light housings if insulation is present above the ceiling.
  • Always check local ordinances before buying housings and lamps to be sure your design complies with safety and energy codes.
  • Get advice from a lighting professional or electrician to be sure your installation will be safe.
