A ceiling fan not only cools your home in summer. During cold seasons it can trim your heating bill by redirecting the hot air that collects at the ceiling down toward the floor. A ceiling fan with lighting built in is great for rooms which need overhead light. Here's how to choose a lighted ceiling fan.

From Quick Guide: Guide to Ceiling Fans
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide how much light you need in the room. You can have one to six lights on a fan. Some fans have separate lighting capabilities--you can illuminate all of the lights on the unit, just one or a set number.

  2. Step 2

Consider blade size. Blades that are too small will be unable to cool a large room. Large blades may aesthetically overwhelm a small room.

  3. Step 3

Browse online for ceiling fans of various shapes, sizes, brands and models (see Resources below). Or visit a home lighting or hardware store in your area to see what's available, and then make your choice.
