The use of color monitors for video intercom systems is growing. Color monitors provide a higher level of lighting than black and white, and produce a richer and more natural image, making it easier to detect people and see them outside. Color also helps you to distinguish the colors outside—the difference between a blue car and a black one or a green car and a red one—on a black and white monitor, the shades of grey will look similar. However, black and white cameras are best suited for lower-light areas.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look at the lighting where you will be installing your video and camera equipment.

  2. Step 2

Consider the area you are covering and the reasons why—if you are in a parking garage, you will likely need the color monitors so you can distinguish color.

  3. Step 3

Make a purchase based on these decisions—in general low-light areas are best suited with black and white cameras; however, the cost of a high-resolution, low-light color monitor may be less than that of increasing the lighting in your outdoor area.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider adding lighting to the area where you are placing the camera.
  • Consider a more expensive camera that can handle low-light areas instead of a less expensive model that requires more light.
  • Consider why you need a color monitor—if it is to distinguish colors, then color is your best bet.
