What is an expandable video monitor? A model that you can gradually add features to, such as additional monitors and cameras. Here's how to select an expandable monitor that will suit your needs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider your space. Optimally, how many cameras will you need to cover the present area? Measure the area and find out how much space is required between the camera and the monitor of the system you're considering. The average distance is about 50 meters. This will give you some idea of how many monitors you'll need. That number can expand if you add rooms to your house or acquire any surrounding property.

  2. Step 2

Count the number of connections on the main terminal of the unit you're considering. If it has only one or two and comes with two stations, it's not expandable. You want a unit that can handle at least 3 to 4 monitors and 2 cameras.

  3. Step 3

For a larger house and property, you can order a unit that handles as many as 8 monitors and 4 cameras. That 2-1 ratio between monitors and cameras provides an excellent rule of thumb when calculating costs.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're not sure if the unit is expandable, ask the salesperson or a security professional.
