How to Become an Affiliate Marketer

Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to make money online. It’s also one of the most competitive. While not a get-rich-quick scheme, there are ways to ensure that you make the most out of your affiliate marketing program.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Web design software

Step1
Find your niche: because the Internet is getting more crowded with ebusinesses, make sure your site stands out from the pack. Just because something already exists doesn't mean you can't do it better.
Step2
Get a memorable web address. Believe it or not, there are still a lot that haven’t been taken. It’s possible to buy out a web address that has already been purchased and parked (no website yet), but this is more expensive.
Step3
Design the website professionally. It’s easier than ever to design a professional-quality website—drag and drop images rather than deal with complicated code. You can also hire a web designer or purchase pre-made templates. A high-quality site will lead to more sales.
Step4
Place affiliate links where they are easily accessible—and don’t crowd too many links together. Think about putting similar products together—either all on the front page or different pages within the site.
Step5
Make sure the affiliate links are on-topic. For example, if your site is about books, make sure affiliate links are book related in some form. At the same time, some affiliate links can cross topics, like credit card offers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Start a blog and/or set up a forum to help the site become a full-fledged community, not just a store. The more useful and informative your site, the more you’ll retain visitors.
  • Keep track of traffic stats to see what keywords are generating the most traffic. Also see what pages on the site generated the most out-clicks so you can improve on those pages.
  • Keep track of those affiliate links that are generating the most revenue and those that are duds. Replace the links that aren’t working.
  • Keep abreast of new affiliate marketing opportunities. More and more businesses are coming on board and offering affiliate programs. Look out for new programs and jump on them before the program becomes oversaturated.
  • Watch out for affiliate programs that that don’t pay out in a timely fashion or, worse yet, don’t pay out at all. Affiliate marketing forums are a good place to find marketing programs that have a good or bad reputation.
