1. Decide how you are going to get to San Jose. San Jose is just less than 50 miles south of San Francisco, but traffic congestion makes driving a nightmare. Trains and buses running direct from San Francisco are a better option. San Jose also has an international airport.
2. Pack accordingly. San Jose has a desert climate and can get extremely hot in the summer and cold at night, so pack for all temperatures. If you plan on doing a lot of walking, pack extra changes of clothes. Bring at least one nice outfit for a night out on the town.
3. Book a hotel before you leave. Search travel sites on the Internet to get information on prices and deals, and check message boards for candid reviews. Get a hotel downtown to save money on taxi fares, as this is where most sightseeing destinations are. Always get a confirmation number.
4. Get to know your way around the city beforehand. Get maps of the city and its public transport system and study them. You should have a general familiarity with the major avenues and streets around your hotel and any attractions you will be visiting.
5. Research destinations within the city. Make a list of what you want to see and do and a rough itinerary of days and attractions. Keep in mind that museums and theaters are often closed one day a week.
6. Look into tours and tour guides. The best way to see the businesses of Silicon Valley is through a guided tour.

• Plan for transportation costs. A taxi from the airport into the city costs $20.00. Check to see if your hotel provides free shuttle service.
• Nature enthusiasts should spend at least a day hiking the Santa Cruz Mountains or the Diablo Range.
