How to Plan a Summer Vacation in San Francisco

San Francisco boasts celebrated landmarks, famously crooked streets, a giant city park and a notorious island jail. The city has earned a reputation as a cultural melting pot, where art meets business and trolleys roll down steep hills towards the ocean. Follow these tips while planning your next visit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer

Step1
Decide on transportation. San Francisco is accessible by train, plane, car, bus and even boat. Each has advantages and disadvantages in cost and convenience. Get tickets beforehand.
Step2
Pack accordingly. San Francisco is blessed with nearly perfect weather—between 60 and 80 degrees F year-round. However, cold weather and rain can quickly roll in from the bay, so be prepared. If you plan on doing a lot of walking, pack extra changes of clothes. Bring at least one dressy outfit for a night on the town.
Step3
Book a hotel before you leave, as accommodations are always in high demand in San Francisco. Try to get one downtown; although rooms here are pricier, you'll save money on subway and BART fares by being centrally located for sightseeing. Search travel sites on the Internet for prices and deals.
Step4
Get to know your way around the city beforehand. Get maps of the city and of the public transportation lines, and study them. Note the major avenues and streets around your hotel and near any attractions you want to visit.
Step5
Research attractions within the city before you go. Make a list of what you want to see and a rough schedule of days and destinations. Keep in mind that museums and theaters are often closed one day a week.
Step6
Look into tours and tour guides. The only way to see Alcatraz is through a guided tour. Sports fans will want to get tickets to a Giants, Warriors or 49ers game.

Tips & Warnings

  • Plan for transportation costs. A taxi from the airport into the city costs $50.00. Check to see if your hotel provides free shuttle service. Public transportation can be pricey, so consider walking.
  • Fisherman's Wharf is a must. This bayside fish market is home to vendors, sea lions, entertainers and an assortment of other interesting sights.
