When you plan a summer vacation to Houston, the possibilities are endless. Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States. Houston is considered an international city; it is a major trade port located on the Gulf of Mexico. Spend time in the Gulf or visit the Houston Space Center, you will never run out of things to do in Houston. Follow these steps to plan a summer vacation in Houston.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  1. Step 1

Decide how you want to travel to Houston. While driving may seem like the cheapest choice, some airlines run specials to major cities. Watch the prices of airfares on a travel Web site. If price is not a problem, then driving may be a better choice as you have time to stop and see sights along the way. You would have your own vehicle and not have to rent one in Houston (see Resouces below).

  2. Step 2

Research hotels and motels in the city. If you have a travel club membership, call their office. They could have discount coupons for you to use on your accommodations. Otherwise, use a travel Web site or call a major hotel chains toll-free number. Try to get a hotel that is near most of the sights that you want to see. Make your reservation and keep your confirmation number with your vacation documents.

  3. Step 3

Call a travel agent or look on the internet to find sights that you want to see. Are you looking for a historical journey, or a family friendly vacation? The choices never end. Visit the Houston Museum District, the Downtown Aquarium, or the National Museum of Funeral History. Some attractions might have tours that need a reservation.

  4. Step 4

Get maps of the city. Whether you get maps from a travel agent or from the internet, they will be a lifesaver. You will be able to plan your trip according to the location of the sights within the city, and you will not be wasting time going from one side of the city to the other. Learn the major thoroughfares, as they will help guide you through the city.

  5. Step 5

Pack for the weather. Houston’s average temperatures range from the low 90’s for highs and mid 70’s for lows in the summer months. If you plan on visiting anywhere that required formal attire, plan accordingly.

  6. Step 6

Plan for someone to watch your home. If you are going for any length of time, it is wise to stop your newspaper and your mail. It is also possible to have a neighbor pick it up for you. Have someone stop by your house periodically to make sure that everything is okay. Make sure that they have a number to get a hold of you in the case of an emergency.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that you leave yourself a little cushion financially. There are always things that are not figured into planning a vacation. The cost of coat checks in museums and of course any souvenirs.
  • If you are planning to visit many sights, there is usually a discounted price if you buy a pass to visit a number of them.
  • Take only minimal cash. Take most of your money in the form of cashier’s checks or credit card. Both are easy to report stolen and are able to be replaced, cash is not.
