Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access

Step1
Look in the classified ads of your local newspaper or surrounding areas. You might also consider searching on the Internet. Some Web sites specialize in entry-level jobs and internships, while others offer summer/seasonal jobs for students.
Step2
Check with your school’s career center to see what they may have regarding a summer job in building maintenance. They may be able to guide you to an employment site. They can give you the passwords and other access information to get into the Web sites for the information.
Step3
Research the Web sites you have found or the jobs you have found in the paper. Determine what the requirements are for each job. Then pick two or three you would like to apply for.
Step4
Prepare a cover letter and your resume. If the jobs have somewhat different positions, make sure you do a cover letter for each one. You may want to prepare a different introduction for each one position. Make it short. You want to grab an employer’s interest during their initial eight-second scan of your resume.
Step5
Send or e-mail your resume to each. Before you e-mail your resume to a potential employer, it would be good idea to e-mail it to a good friend and then have them proofread it and then e-mail it back to you. In addition to making sure that your cover letter and resume are clearly written and free of errors, you will be certain that you are correctly attaching all necessary files and will have a complete submission by e-mail.
Step6
Be prepared for the interview. Think about what they may ask you and have the answers ready. When you schedule an interview, determine where it will take place and with whom you are meeting. Dress appropriately for the interview, if you are going to meet in a professional environment dress more formally, but if you are to meet in the shop, dress more casually, neat and clean, but show you are ready to go to work.

Tips & Warnings

  • Go over your cover letter and resume and check for errors. With several to choose from, resumes with mistakes are going to be thrown out.
  • If you have any employment gaps in which you did not work for a time, you will want to explain by inserting a “job title” such as student, traveled abroad, etc. to let them know why you did not work during that time.
