Windows are a favorite entry point for thieves. In order to protect your home fully, you need to install window sensors for a home security alarm system. The window sensors trigger the alarm if a burglar forces open the window.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • window sensors
  • tools
  1. Step 1

Gather the tools you will need to install the window sensors for a home security alarm system. Although the exact tools will depend on the specific model you will probably need a drill and a screw driver.

  2. Step 2

Mark the locations for the contact switches, and drill pilot holes for the screws. Attach the contact switches to the casement and window frame so that they will break contact if the window is opened.

  3. Step 3

Mark the locations for the window sensor unit. Place the sensor unit as close to top of window as possible. Mark the location of the screw holes and drill pilot holes for the window sensor unit.

  4. Step 4

Attach the window sensor unit to the wall. You may need to use dry-wall anchors to get a solid attachment.

  5. Step 5

Calibrate the window sensor with your home security alarm system for the best performance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some window sensor units are powered by batteries and require no further steps to install. If your window sensor runs on household current, you will need to hook the sensor up to the household circuit.
  • Make sure that the contact switches on the window frame separate completely when the window is opened. The contact switches must separate in order to trigger an alarm.
  • If the window sensor for your system is a wireless system, the radio frequency that it uses to signal the main alarm system can be jammed or blocked by other devices in the immediate vicinity.
