How to Camp in Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park in Montana provides its guests with forest, mountain, lake and meadow views. A camping trip to Glacier National Park will give you access to the sights, to bus tours, to hiking and more--and it will give you a chance to kick back with family or friends and to catch up without any of the normal day to day distractions. Read on to learn how to camp in Glacier National Park.

  1. Step 1

    Plan ahead. How long do you plan to be out camping? When do you want to camp?

  2. Step 2

    Once you have determined when you will go camping at Glacier National Park, consider what type of campground you will need. Will you need access for an RV? A lean-to? Or just a site for a tent?

  3. Step 3

    Pack for your trip. Only bring as much gear, food, water and clothing as you will need to have available.

  4. Step 4

    Head to the park and select a vacant camp site.

  5. Step 5

    Fill out a fee envelope and pay at the registration area. Be sure to keep the receipt from the envelop and clip it to your site post.

Tips & Warnings
  • While many camping sites at Glacier National Park are available on a first-come,first-served basis, Fish Creek and St. Mary sites may be reserved in advance. Online reservations can be made through reservations.nps.gov, and you can learn more by calling (406) 888-7800.
  • The time of year will determine which campsites will be open and available.
  • Registrations need to be made within 30 minutes of your arrival.
  • Be aware of the rules associated with the campsites and follow them. Respect other campers and the national park.
  • Keep in mind that camping is only allowed in designated areas to the park.
  • Camping is limited to seven consecutive nights.
  • Check out time is noon. If you decide to stay an extra night, you'll have to re-register for the site prior to noon.
