The 4 C's are the best place to start when researching or shopping for a diamond. One thing to remember though, is that everyone's personal preference is different.
While it is accepted that the best color grade is "D" some people prefer a diamond that has a little bit of color to it, giving it character or personality. There are even fancy colored diamonds to chose from, which are graded on a whole different scale, but are just as beautiful.
The 4 C's are a good guide to what the consumer market deems valuble, but don't forget to weigh your own opinions too. Just because a certain diamond is graded higher, doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be more beautiful to you.

Learning the 4 C's is the first step you should take when buying a diamond. The 4 C's are:
1)COLOR
2)CARAT
3)CUT
4)Clarity
*Diamond color is rated on a scale of D to Z. D is the best color grade diamond there is. It means the diamond is truly a "Colorless" diamond. There is not an A,B,C grade.
*Carat refers to the weight of the diamond. Some people think it refers to the size of the diamond. Although a larger carat weight tends to mean a larger diamond, it actually just refers to the weight of the diamond. Because a diamond can be cut "Deep", "Shallow", or "Ideal", a diamond with the same carat weight can appear to be larger or smaller than another diamond with the same carat weight.
Here is a good source for explaining the 4 C's including "Cut" and "Clarity."
