Telluride, Colorado, located in the San Juan part of the Rocky Mountains, has won fame for its breathtaking mountain vistas. Telluride offers something for everyone, from nightlife to theater, ski slopes to swimming pools and casinos to country lodges.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Estimate how much a summer vacation to Telluride will cost. Factor in airfare or train fees, accommodations, attraction fees, transportation, tips, souvenirs and food. Once you have created a budget, find the best method of transportation and book the tickets. Keep in mind that you usually cannot get your deposit refunded, so make sure your travel dates work for you.

  2. Step 2

Find a trusted friend to look after your house, pets or business. Go to the post office and fill out the paperwork to have your mail held there rather than delivered to your house. Call your newspaper agency and have them hold your paper as well. These steps will ward off any would-be burglars.

  3. Step 3

Make a packing list and stick to it. Consult a travel guide or call the hotel concierge if you have any questions on attire. Many theater productions require that you wear something nicer than jeans, but you must also pack casual clothes for sightseeing. Let your destination dictate your wardrobe.

  4. Step 4

Select your accommodations after you have thoroughly researched your options. Find a hotel within your budget in a location that is central to the activities you will be enjoying over the length of your vacation. Also, be aware that if your hotel is far from attractions, you will be paying more for transportation costs.

  5. Step 5

Get to know Telluride. Study maps of the city, some with just streets and others with popular destinations.

  6. Step 6

Find the destinations and attractions that you would like to visit. Note their location, cost and schedule. Make sure favored attractions are available during your visit, as most ski resorts are not open in July. Make a list of the destinations you have decided upon and get directions before you go.

  7. Step 7

Look into taking a tour of the city or using a tour guide. Often these tours are inexpensive and can help inexperienced travelers familiarize themselves with the city of Telluride. Use your travel guide to give you a list or ask at the front desk of your hotel. Certain attractions will host guided tours, which will be invaluable if you are at a historical location or a place that has a lot to see.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Telluride Balloon Rally takes place during the first weekend in June every year. It is a spectacular site that is not to be missed!
  • Don’t forget your cell phone charger, camera dock or extra batteries and film. These can be hard to locate while on vacation.
