Find the dates that best work for your trip, and quickly book your transportation. Washington is easily accessible by plane, train or bus.

  2. Step 2

Make arrangements for your house and job. Contact your employer and apply for your vacation days if necessary. Find a housesitter or a trusted friend or neighbor to water your plants, take in your mail and papers, and watch over the house. Make arrangements for any pets, as well.

Generate a packing list based on the attractions you will be visiting and the lodging you are staying at. If you are camping, pack accordingly. Allow plenty of time at each attraction, and be discerning when choosing where you will be visiting. Using the city's visitor's bureau can help you find links to attraction hours, fees and attire guidelines.

  7. Step 7
