Croatia offers travelers both mountains to ski in and seascapes to admire at the Adriatic Sea at reasonable prices. The coastline is dotted with over 1100 islands, fewer than 100 of which are inhabited. Follow these steps to start planning your trip through the countryside on Croatian Railways.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Portable computer, PDA or other web-enabled mobile device
  • Computer with Internet access and printer
  • Pen and paper to jot down information from train terminal display boards

Access a List of Online Train Times for Croatian Railways

  1. Step 1

Visit the Croatian Railways official Web site (see Resources below). Or, you can call Croatian Railways at 011 (+385) 060 333 444 for additional information.

  2. Step 2

Select your language before attempting to use online schedules and timetables on the Web site.

  3. Step 3

    Select the "Timetable Leaflet" option.

  4. Step 4

Choose the train station where you want to begin (or end) your journey. Select the "Arrival" or "Departure" options.

  5. Step 5

    Press the "Show time-table" button.

  6. Step 6

Review the list of options, make your selection and press the linked train number (on the left) for a full listing of arrival and departure times.

  7. Step 7

Right-click (with your mouse) on the schedule window and select the "Print" option to print the schedule.

  8. Step 8

Select "Export to Excel" from the right-click menu if you're using a Windows computer with Excel installed. This is a helpful alternative to simply printing the page.

  9. Enjoy Your Train Travel in Croatia

  10. Step 1

Rub elbows with the stars. Dubbed "The New Riviera," the many islands and coastal areas of Croatia have recently captured the attention of the Hollywood elite.

  11. Step 2

Head to the beach on a bus: an extensive bus network may augment your travel plans, especially in coastal areas.

  12. Step 3

Gorge on local goodies. Fresh seafood and truffles (when in season) are favorites of natives and visitors alike.

  13. Step 4

Visit the coast from April to October, when it's warm; but know that, even in the winter, the coastal areas usually don't freeze.

Tips & Warnings
  • Speak Croatian, or get by in English, French or German, the most commonly spoken foreign languages in Croatia.
  • Stay hydrated and limit or avoid sun exposure from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Comfortable breezes will belie the dangers of over-exposure to the sun in this region.
  • Uneven public areas make a backpack or sling better than a stroller if you're traveling with young children on Croatian Railways.
