How to Book Train Travel From Chicago to Dallas

Chicago is a major hub for transportation, especially passenger rail service. In order to book train travel from Chicago to Dallas, the beautiful Chicago Union Station will most certainly appear on your itinerary. Follow these steps to start planning your trip.

    Book Your Train Route

  1. Step 1

    Book your ticket through the Amtrak Web site (see Resources below) or call Amtrak at (800) 872-7245.

  2. Step 2

    Choose either a first-class or a coach seat. The coach class on the Texas Eagle offers leg rests and extra space for passengers who choose not to reserve within the sleeper cars. Sleeper cars automatically qualify as first-class accommodations.

  3. Step 3

    Expect a 22-hour train ride. This estimate doesn't include layovers.

  4. Step 4

    Arrive at Dallas Union Station. Follow the signs posted for baggage claim.

  5. Step 5

    Purchase tickets for travel on the Amtrak route known as the 421 Texas Eagle. The ticketing office in Chicago Union Station is open daily from 6:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. Otherwise, book your tickets online or over the phone.

  6. Sit Back and Enjoy the Ride

  7. Step 1

    Rent a portable digEplayer for the trip at Chicago Union Station. This portable entertainment device includes movies, television shows and music videos to help pass the time.

  8. Step 2

    Learn something new. As a part of Amtrak's Rails and Trails program, the Texas Eagle features commentary from the National Park Service along the route.

  9. Step 3

    Grab a bite to eat. This train features a full-service dining car and lounge where diners can choose to either dine-in or carry-out their meals.

  10. Step 4

    Sleep well. This train offers sleeper cars with comfy beds and fresh linens.

  11. Step 5

    Be on the lookout for great art. The train platforms at Dallas Union Station are covered by historic murals dating back to 1934.

Tips & Warnings
  • You'll have many itineraries to choose from. The Texas Eagle runs daily.
  • Coach passengers must enough money for meals. Meals are only included in the price of a first-class ticket.
  • Chicago Union Station is huge. It expands across nine and a half city blocks. It's also located underground, amidst skyscrapers in downtown Chicago. Come armed with a station map!
