Things You'll Need:
- Computer with Internet access
- Passport
-
Step 1
Book your ticket through Rail Europe by visiting the Web site (see Resources) or calling a North American agent at (888) 382-RAIL.
-
Step 2
Log on to the Turkish Rail System's Web site to check rates and availability for the route you'd like to take. There is an English language button located at the bottom of the page that will direct you to the appropriate link.
-
Step 3
Fill out the required information to become a "member" of the Turkish train system. Once you have completed this registration, you can continue the process and book your ticket. There is a helpful FAQ section that should answer most of the questions you might have.
-
Step 4
Go to the train station in Turkey to pick up your ticket a day or two in advance if possible.
-
Step 5
Consider a rail pass instead of a point to point ticket if you plan to continue your travel beyond Bulgaria. Some regional passes offer great savings when compared to standard one-way tickets. However, you may want to speak with a travel agent as the Rail Pass System is notoriously confusing.
-
Step 1
Look at a map to determine the best route that takes you through the areas which you'd like to visit. Though the Turkish-Bulgarian border is relatively small, once in Bulgaria your routing options increase.
-
Step 2
Discuss your plans with a travel agent in Turkey if you are new to the region or simply want some outside advice. Though Turkish train travel has increased in tourist popularity in recent years, it is not nearly as developed and tourist-friendly as similar rail systems in other parts of Europe.
-
Step 3
Look into availablity and pricing information for an overnight train. On an overnight train, you'll be able to book a couchette or a private cabin that promises a relatively comfortable night.
-
Step 4
Train service between Turkey and Bulgaria is available daily on the Bosphorus Express.
