Things You'll Need:
- Passport
- Computer with Internet access
-
Step 1
Book train travel at the Rail Europe Web site (see Resources). You can also call (888) 382-RAIL.
-
Step 2
Visit the Siberian Railways Web site for general information, schedules and fares.
-
Step 3
Decide whether you want to travel coach (a center aisle separates seats on either side of the open car) or in compartments (the car is made up of enclosed cabins rather than open seating) from Serbia. Check to see what is available and consider the difference in price.
-
Step 4
Choose Zagreb, Croatia, as your ideal destination. The Croatia Railways lines are centered around Zagreb, the capital city. From there, you can travel by train throughout the country. You can ride the regional trains to get to smaller towns.
-
Step 5
Book the new high-speed train when traveling from Rijeka to Split. The trip only takes about 6 hours. This train offers first- and second-class seating, along with sleeper cars for overnight travel.
-
Step 6
Figure out how long you're going to visit Croatia before purchasing a round-trip ticket. Remember that train travel is all about experiencing a country at a slower pace.
-
Step 1
Take time to visit the coastal cities of Croatia. Rijeka was awarded "Best Destination for 2006" by National Geographic Adventure. The city of Split was built on the remains of a palace built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian around 300 AD.
-
Step 2
Visit Rijeka during late January or early February if you want to experience one of the largest Carnivals in the world. Over 10,000 masqueraders and carnival groups participate.
-
Step 3
Enjoy yourself in the buff at one of the many naturist (aka nudist) resorts and beaches. More than a million naturists visit Croatia every year, accounting for about 15 percent of the tourism there.
