How to Find Luxury Hotels in Dushanbe, Tajikistan

The many changes the political climate of Dushanbe, Tajikistan, has undergone over the years can be seen reflected in the number of name changes it has experienced, from Stalinabad in 1929 to Leninabad in 1961 to the current Dushanbe in 1989. While the area is relatively tourist-friendly, Tajikistan's close proximity to Afghanistan makes Dushanbe a dangerous destination for Americans traveling abroad.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Choose Your Accommodations

  1. Step 1

Book accommodations at Hotel Tajikistan by calling 011 (+992) 372 216262 or visiting its Web site (see Resources). (From outside of the United States, call 00 (+992) 372 216262.)

  2. Step 2

Visit the United Friends Tourism Company's Web site to book lodgings online (see Resources). Call 011 (+998) 71 3670419 to book by phone. (From outside of the United States, call 00 (+998) 71 3670419.)

  3. Step 3

Rent an apartment for your stay. There are many apartments for rent from $100 to $500 a month. Be cautious not be taken advantage of, as renters in the past have been known to be overcharged if the owner assumes they are wealthy.

  4. Step 4

Consider a bed-and-breakfast stay. Some Dushanbe bed and breakfasts offer the same luxury items as many of the hotels, including excellent meals and Internet access.

  5. Step 5

Research your lodging thoroughly. There are luxury or near-luxury accommodations within Dushanbe, but unfortunately the listings of accommodations for perusal online are limited. You may want to consider booking through a travel agent for convenience.

  6. Know Your Destination

  7. Step 1

Prepare for minimal amenities. Electricity and running water are not available in much of Dushanbe, although luxury accommodations should have these "necessities" available.

  8. Step 2

Be on guard for potential street crime. A falling economy in Tajikistan has accompanied a rise in crime in Dushanbe, and visitors are advised to be extra careful when traveling at night.

  9. Organize Your Transportation

  10. Step 1

Consider the convenience of flight travel. Due to the mountainous terrain, most Dushanbe travel should be done by plane or helicopter.

  11. See Popular Attractions in Tajikistan

  12. Step 1

Experience the music and tastes of the traditional Tajik chaikhana or teahouses. They can be recognized by trademark colorful benches outside the building.

  13. Step 2

    Hike the climber-friendly Fann Mountains.

  14. Step 3

Attend a production at the Opera Ballet Theater.

Tips & Warnings
  • In case of theft, keep a copy of your passport in your hotel or somewhere separate from the actual passport during your visit.
  • All telephone country codes are within parentheses and begin with a "+" sign.
  • Do not carry much foreign currency on you when you leave. Customs officers at the Dushanbe Airport will fine you.
