America's neighbor to the north, Canada, is the second-largest country in the world by area, with a multicultural citizenry, vibrant major cities and vast natural beauty. It's also known for being one of the friendliest countries to visit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Valid passport

Select Your Cheap Accommodations in Canada

Step1
Get the scoop on lodgings throughout Canada when you visit the Web site of the Canadian Tourism Commission (see the Resources section below).
Step2
Pull into a motel for money-saving accommodations. They often have kitchenettes and are close to local restaurants. These are great places to stay if you need a stopover while driving.
Step3
Listen to the crickets outside from the comfort of a cabin. The wilderness in Canada is one of the country's greatest attractions, and cabins are plentiful and often quite cheap. They provide a perfect getaway.
Step4
Stay in a Canadian hostel. Located throughout the country, these are cheap accommodations for anyone on a budget and are generally safe and clean. Canada has a low crime rate and is an orderly, but open, country. Hostels can be as cheap as $15 or as pricey as $75.

Know Your Destination

Step1
Brace yourself in winter. There's a reason most of the inhabitants live as far south as possible. Canada is famously cold. Summers are mild, however.
Step2
Research the differences between eastern provinces and western provinces. Like the United States, different areas can offer very diverse cultural and culinary experiences.
Step3
Experience some new cooking. The dishes may sound odd at first, but you could fall in love with delicious poutine, nanaimo bars, beaver tails, fiddleheads and other colorful dishes.

Determine Your Transportation

Step1
Fly into and around Canada. Because the country is large, flying may be the best way to explore it. Montreal and Toronto on the east coast have major international airports; Vancouver and Calgary have them on the west coast.
Step2
Take advantage of the network of bus lines that cross Canada. For long hauls, this is certainly a comfortable way to travel. Compared with trains, it is cheap, too.
Step3
Rent a car when traveling to smaller destinations, like ski resorts or lakeside cabins. There may be bus service into town, but you'll still need your own transportation once you arrive.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider a package tour if you plan on seeing several cities. They are often the best deal.
  • Brush up on your French. Though most Canadians either speak English or are bilingual, there are two official languages in Canada.
