Things You'll Need:

    Travel and Accommodations

  1. Step 1

Make lodging reservations through the Travel Michigan office of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Call their toll-free number, (800) 644-2489, or visit their Web site (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Travel by car or bus. Michigan has one of the top highway systems in the nation--it is home to the Motor City, after all. If you don't want to rent a car, Greyhound provides services throughout the state.

  3. Step 3

Stay at a high-class hotel in major cities. Mid-priced and budget hotels are available in all the major cities such as Detroit or Ann Arbor, and you'll find most name-brand hotels anywhere you go.

  4. Step 4

Opt for cozy. You'll find bed and breakfasts, cottages or resorts in major cities as well quaint towns such Birmingham and Mackinac Island.

  5. Step 5

Fly into Michigan. Detroit Metropolitan Airport, the state's largest, is a hub for Northwest Airlines. Pontiac Oakland County Airport is nearby, while Capital City Airport serves Lansing.

  6. Discover Michigan

  7. Step 1

Visit Michigan's metropolises. Lansing is the capital. Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan, one of the nation's top public universities. Detroit has all the attractions of a major city.

  8. Step 2

Travel to wine country. You'll find numerous vineyards throughout the state. Take tasting tours and stay at beautiful resorts.

  9. Step 3

Visit Michigan in the winter. While the state is relatively flat, there are fair-sized mountains on the Upper Peninsula; when compared to its neighbors in the Midwest, Michigan is positively alpine. You'll find resorts and slopes in prime snow areas, and snowmobile trails abound statewide.

  10. Step 4

Bite the apple. Michigan is one of top fruit growing states. Visit one of its many orchards and eat the apples right off the tree--or simply stand still and appreciate the marvelous smell.

  11. Step 5

Head to Mackinac Island if you have a taste for 19th-century charm. Experience the height of Victorian recreational style on an island that doesn't tolerate motor vehicles. Even the accommodations reflect the island's Victorian sensibilities.
