Once a quiet farming town in the Berkshires, Lenox became popular with the artistic set and the well-to-do during the 1800s. Novelists Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edith Wharton both called Lenox home--in fact, Wharton's house still stands and is a popular attraction. The natural beauty that lured celebrities here over 150 years ago still attracts tourists today.

Things You’ll Need:

Find Accommodations

Step1
Call the Lenox Chamber of Commerce at (413) 637-3646. They offer lodging referrals and can provide you with insight into the town.
Step2
Visit the Berkshire Visitors Bureau's Web site (see Resources below) to book hotels in Lenox and the surrounding area.
Step3
Stay at a local hotel. Their prices are generally cheaper than most alternatives and they provide all the usual amenities.
Step4
Head to an inn or bed and breakfast. The Berkshires abound with quaint Victorian lodgings. You'll enjoy all the creature comforts while surrounded by nature at its prettiest.
Step5
Reserve a room in a chain hotel. While they might lack a little charm, you'll know what to expect. Lenox has many of the familiar names from which to choose.

Discover Lenox

Step1
Check out the arts and crafts sold seemingly everywhere in Lenox. There's pottery, jewelry and paintings from famous artists and local hopefuls alike.
Step2
Enjoy the scenery. The bucolic beauty of the Berkshires is what draws many visitors to the area.
Step3
Spend the winter. Lenox is a popular vacation spot for snow-loving adults as well as children.

Getting There

Step1
Flying to Lenox is not exactly the most direct method. The nearest major airports are Albany International in New York and Bradley International in Hartford, Conn. It's a two-hour drive from either airport to Lenox.
Step2
Catch the bus. There are two bus lines that serve Lenox, and they're probably the least-expensive option.
Step3
Take your car. It takes about two and a half hours to drive from Boston to Lenox; the trip from New York takes about three hours. Lenox is 10 minutes north of the Massachusetts Turnpike and the drive through the Berkshires is an experience in itself.

Tips & Warnings

  • Lenox is home to Tanglewood, which every summer plays host the Boston Symphony Orchestra and other world-class musicians--as well as more than 350,000 visitors. If you plan on visiting Lenox during July and August, be sure to book well in advance.
