Air Berlin was started in 1978 in Oregon by a former Pan Am pilot because Germany had air restrictions placed on it after World War II. At first, the company had one Boeing 707, which flew to Palma de Mallorca. In 1990, the airline was purchased by German investors, and charter flights to many more destinations were added. In the late 1990s, Air Berlin began to offer scheduled flights to many key cities within Europe.
