How to Travel From Kisumu to Nairobi, Kenya by Rail

Although Nairobi is quickly becoming a modern, cosmopolitan city, it still retains much of its old-fashioned appeal. Tourists can visit the Nairobi National Park, home to a variety of wildlife, or take in the Fourteen Falls waterfalls. The more adventurous can go white-water rafting on the Tana River. With so much to do, the train ride from Kisumu to Nairobi is a great time to relax and get ready for the fun to come.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Passport
  • Computer with Internet access

Book Train Tickets

Step1
Call Kenya Railways at 011 (+254) 2 221 211 to book tickets.
Step2
Use a travel agent to make a reservation for a first- or second-class suite.
Step3
Ask about third-class seating, which may be available on some trains. Book online or in person at the train station in Kisumu.

Prepare for the Trip

Step1
Take the Port Florence Express leaving from Kisumu to Nairobi on Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday at 6:30 p.m. No other travel days are available.
Step2
Bring your own bottled water, toilet paper and other necessities that may not be available on the train.
Step3
Stock up on batteries for your electronic gadgets and bring magazines, books or other amusements for the long trip.
Step4
Expect at least a 13 1/2 hour trip, though it often takes much longer when there are delays. The train is scheduled to arrive at 8 a.m. the following morning.

Choose Your Accommodations

Step1
Book a first-class sleeper suite and enjoy two convertible berths and an en-suite bathroom for around $45 per person.
Step2
Go for a second-class suite with two bunks and an in-room bathroom for about $30 per person. This four-person room can also be used for smaller groups for more space.
Step3
Save money by traveling third class if a seat is available, although this option is not recommended for foreign visitors. The few extra dollars for a first- or second-class seat will be well worth it.

Enjoy the Trip

Step1
Socialize with other adventurers in the restaurant car as you travel to Nairobi.
Step2
Get a glimpse of traditional cultures as you pass towns and villages along the route.

  • All phone numbers include the U.S. international prefix "011." When calling internationally outside the United States, substitute that "011" with "00."

  • Breakfast and dinner as well as beverages and spirits are included in each fare.
  • Keep your schedule flexible. Delays and unpredictable schedule changes are common on Kenyan lines.
  • Kenya Railways doesn't have a Web site, so booking from the company online isn't an option.
  • Be cautious and vigilant when traveling in Kenya. Crime is a problem in some areas. Check the U.S. State Department Web site for travel advisories.
