Prepare to Tour Canada by Rail

  1. Step 1

Call Canada By Rail at (613) 564-8104 to book travel, or visit their Web site (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Exchange U.S. dollars for Canadian dollars at the train station kiosk. Exchanges can be done on the train, but it is not recommended as you may not receive the best rate. Credit cards are widely accepted, but you'll be happy to have some Canadian cash on hand.

  3. Use VIA Rail to Find Packages

  4. Step 1

Decide where you want to depart from and how long you'd like to travel for. If you are traveling from the U.S., consider flying into Vancouver or Toronto and leave from there.

  5. Step 2

Search the VIA Rail Canada Web site for vacation packages. There are hundreds to choose from.

  6. Step 3

Consider which class you would like to book. Book Comfort Class for economical accommodations. Book a Sleeper Class ticket for access to a berth or bed so you can sleep while you travel. In the west, book either a Totem or Totem Deluxe Class ticket for panoramic views on your trip.

Tips & Warnings
  • When traveling through Quebec, New Brunswick and some parts of Ontario, it is helpful to know some French. Bring a phrase book along.
