Slovenia is a small nation blessed with a variety of terrains, beaches and mountains. See this central European country by train and enjoy the majestic scenery from the comfort of your own seat.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  • Valid passport

Take a Trip on the Slovenske Zeleznice (Slovenia Railways)

Step1
Call Rail Europe at (877) 257-2887 to reserve your space on Slovenia Railways, or visit their Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Purchase tickets for Slovenia Railways at the train station or from licensed agents throughout Slovenia. You will find agent information on the railway's Web site.
Step3
Purchase your ticket before you board the train for your trip, or you will be charged an additional fee by the conductor for your ticket.
Step4
Pay a small additional fee when you book travel on the country's InterCity express trains.
Step5
Check out the Slovenske Zeleznice Web site for frequent discount offers on train travel in Slovenia. This site is available in English and provides information on packaged train trips as well as accommodations for people with disabilities.
Step6
Escape to one of Slovenia's health spas by taking advantage of packages like the Spa train when you book your trip on Slovenia Railways. You can save on your rail transport as well as your spa visit.
Step7
Expect to transfer in the capital city of Ljubljana when you travel by Slovenia's railways. Coverage of some regions is spotty, so you may not be able to reach all destinations by train.
Step8
Expect modern and comfortable trains on most of the railways routes, but don't be surprised if the train terminals seem dilapidated. The company lavished money on modernizing the fleet, leaving little for the renovation of train halts and terminals.
Step9
Save money and take the train instead of the bus when you can. You can save as much as 30 percent per ride by choosing the train.

Know Your Destination

Step1
Fly into Slovenia's international airport, Ljubljana Brnik, located outside the country's capital.
Step2
Book a trip on a train from Austria to travel through the Julien Alps to reach Slovenia by rail. In clear weather, this is an amazing ride through Slovenia's alpine peaks.
Step3
Hear Italian and German spoken in Slovenia as well as its official language, Slovenian. You can also expect to hear some English.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bring along your euros; Slovenia switched to this currency in January 2007.
  • Don't litter, especially in the alpine regions of Slovenia. Slovenians are justly proud of their country's natural beauty and expect you to maintain it.
