Moscow, the capitol of Russia, is home to the Kremlin, the ceremonial palace of the Russian president. Moscow also maintains world-renowned theater and arts and has the largest population of any European city. Follow these steps to start planning your trip.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Valid visas
  • Sponsorship from entity or individual in Russia
  • Migration Card, which is available at all border crossings and usually on flights into Russia
  • Computer with Internet access for making reservations
  • Valid passport

    Choose Your Luxury Accommodations

  1. Step 1

Call the Russian National Group at their New York office at 877-221-7120 in order to book accommodations in Moscow, or visit their Web site (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Treat yourself at the Sheraton Palace Hotel. Reserve a room by calling 011 (+7) 495 931 9700 or by visiting the hotel's Web site (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

Choose accommodations close to the Bohemian quarter if you're looking for more foot traffic. Try one in the famous pedestrian zone of Arbat street.

  4. Step 4

Be prepared to pay roughly $350 a night at any of the 5-star luxury hotels.

  5. Step 5

Consider luxury accommodations near the Moskva River for fantastic views and unforgettable photo opportunities.

  6. Get to Moscow, Russia

  7. Step 1

Fly into either Sheremetevo-2 or Domodedovo airport, which are northwest and south of city center, respectively.

  8. Step 2

Take the bus! Bus routes servicing Moscow extend as far out as 700 kilometers.

  9. Step 3

Ride the train. Moscow has rail links to most parts of Russia, China and Europe.

  10. Organize Transportation

  11. Step 1

Get on the metro at one of the 150 stations around the city. Many of the stations are beautiful works of art with gorgeous marble and frescoes. The older stations run deeper because they were meant to double as bomb shelters.

  12. Step 2

Take a tram, bus or trolley for traveling farther out to the city's edge.

  13. Step 3

Flag down a taxi! They're everywhere. Just make sure to negotiate the fare before the driving starts. No one uses a meter.

  14. Know Your Destination

  15. Step 1

Know that entry and exit regulations are very strict in Russia. Adhere to the visitation dates on your visa.

  16. Step 2

Have your migration card handy when checking into your hotel. You can't check in without it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dress warmly! The hottest it gets in the summer is 68 F.
  • Sponsorship from an entity (hotel, tourist agency, etc.) will grant you a Tourist Visa. Sponsorship from an individual will grant you a Guest Visa. It is not advised to change visa types once in Russia.
  • Carry your passport and visas with you at all times.
  • All phone numbers include the United States international prefix "011." When calling internationally outside the United States, substitute that "011" with "00."
  • All country codes are within parentheses and begin with a "+" sign.
  • If you overstay your visit beyond the exit date listed on your visa, you'll be prevented from leaving until your sponsor steps in to request a visa extension.
  • Under Russian law, travelers with expired visas may not check into any kind of hotel, motel or lodging accommodations.
