Despite damage sustained when Hurricane Wilma battered the Caribbean coastline in 2005, Cozumel continues to be a favorite among travelers. You'll find most hotels and two of the city's three oceanliner piers restored today. The diving and snorkeling opportunities are still great. Follow these steps to start planning your trip.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access for making reservations
  • Tourist permit (generally included in airfare)
  • Valid passport

Choose Your Accommodations in Cozumel, Mexico

Step1
Book your accommodations in Cozumel, Mexico by calling Isla Cozumel at 011 (+52) 987 872 75 85. You can also reserve lodging through its Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Plan to pay twice the price when you book accommodations in the high season, especially in the months of February and March when tourism to Cozumel is at its peak.
Step3
Find plentiful timeshare opportunities in Cozumel but do your research before settling on one. You'll find 2- and 3-star hotels offer units and amenities that vary from place to place. Be aware of additional fees associated with timeshare swapping in this part of Mexico.
Step4
Enjoy a good night's sleep in one of Cozumel's cozy bed and breakfast establishments. You must book these accommodations early, especially during the peak season. Rooms are limited.

Plan Your Stay in Cozumel, Mexico

Step1
Get your diving certification before traveling or plan to pay an additional charge for it at the resort. Diving in Cozumel continues to be some of the best in the Western Hemisphere.
Step2
Plan to pay for your day in the sun in Cozumel. The majority of its rocky beaches are not suitable for sunbathing but you will find sand beaches where you can lounge after paying a small entrance fee.
Step3
Bring along your snorkel equipment or you can expect to pay a $10 (or more) rental fee in addition to the entrance fee.

Arrange Transportation

Step1
Fly directly to Cozumel from Houston or Denver in the United States or Cancun in Mexico. Cozumel International Airport also offers regional service through the peninsula.
Step2
Float by Cozumel on a Caribbean cruise. This city is a popular port for many cruise ships, which offer day and overnight stays in the city.
Step3
Rent a car in Cozumel. Don't expect to take the bus. There is no public transportation system in this resort town, so most tourists make their way around by car, by taxi or on foot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before making your final reservation, be sure to check out the area surrounding your hotel. Though most have been restored, construction on this city's hotels continues. You may find yourself sleeping next to a loud construction area.
  • All phone numbers start with the U.S. international prefix "011." When calling internationally outside the United States, substitute that "011" with "00."
