Jackson Hole is the valley; Jackson is the trendy ski town within. As the gateway to both Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park, the town attracts many tourists, and well-heeled ones at that.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Credit card
  • Map of northwest Wyoming, or Jackson Hole in particular
  • Computer with an internet connection

Choose Your Accommodations in Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Step1
Book accommodations by phone at 800-225-5996 or by visiting Wyoming's tourism Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Stay right in Jackson. Although it's an upscale ski town, there are some reasonably priced motels.
Step3
Head just out of town. The southern approach to Jackson and Jackson Hole offers a variety of lodging options, including campgrounds, cabins, inns and lodges.

Know Your Destination

Step1
See for yourself. Believe it or not, when John Colter (formerly of the Lewis & Clark expedition) wrote about this area, he had a hard time getting anyone to believe the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone were as majestic as he described. Visit these parks and you'll know he was right.
Step2
Bring your woolies. More than a mile above sea level, Jackson Hole can be chilly at night, even during the summer.
Step3
Check out the elk-antler arches in the town square. Elk are big here--the National Elk Refuge is located just outside of Jackson, and the world's only public auction of elk antlers takes place in the square on the third Saturday in May.

Know More about Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Step1
Start typing. That's the name of the game at the Jackson Hole Writers Conference, which brings in authors and agents to conduct a variety of workshops for aspiring writers the last weekend each June.
Step2
Fill the hole in your schedule with a visit to the world's largest ball of barbed wire.
Step3
Shop, shop, shop. The town is small and tourist friendly with a wide variety of upscale clothing and souvenir stores.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask your reservations clerk if there are any additional discounts to be had; like any tourist area, Jackson does have off-season rates.
  • Jackson boasts a large number of rental condos and homes. Most owners come to town for the ski season, making the remaining months an economical time to visit.
