- Pet (not human) shampoo
- Towels
- Dog brush or comb
- Treats

Step 1
Set the mood. Instead of waiting till your dog is in the tub to get the shampoo and supplies ready, why not have a basket with all your supplies ready to go? You’ll need lots of towels, lavender or nicely-scented dog shampoo (human shampoo can be too harsh), a rubber tub mat for him to stand on, and either a large cup to rinse or better yet, a sprayer that attaches to your faucet. The newer versions even hold shampoo.
Getting all your supplies ready ahead of time really helps lessen the anxiety for your dog, as will some nice calming music. My dog prefers to howl along with some slow blues, but whatever you and your pooch like to listen to... -
Step 2
First, though, start the spa experience off with a vigorous brushing. Most dogs love the sensation. And not only will you get rid of a lot of the excess hair that would otherwise end up in your drain, but it’s also a lot easier to get rid of tangles and mats in dry fur than wet.

Step 3
Now it's time for the tub. If he tends to try to jump out, there are suction cup devices that can attach to his collar to keep him around. Treats can help too, as well your soothing voice.

Step 4
Wet him all over with lukewarm (not hot) water. Squeeze some shampoo into your hands to warm it up, then rub it gently into his coat. There are great new massage brushes that hold shampoo as well. Rinse well, using your hands to squeeze out the excess shampoo. Now jump back! He’ll probably choose this moment to shake the water off.

Step 5
For that final relaxing touch, rub him all over with towels (this is my dog’s favorite part). If he’s still wet, you can try drying him with a hair dryer set on a low setting. Wrap him in a nice big warm towel and let him chill out with a chewie... Now give yourself a nice big tip!
