If you're planning a future in the health-care field, a summer job in health services can offer valuable experience. Any position you assume will enhance your résumé, and you'll also enjoy the rewards that come from helping others.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
Step1
Explore the various facets of health-care and choose one that suits you. Your options include hospice care, nutrition, physical therapy or drug-abuse counseling.
Step2
Decide where you want to work. How much time do you want to spend commuting? Many jobs in health care—for example, hospice care—will require you to travel.
Step3
Research your prospective employer. Many health-care providers have Web sites you can visit. If possible, you should tour the facilities before applying for a position.
Step4
Find out what duties the provider will expect you to perform, and then tailor your résumé to fit the job description.
Step5
Apply to your prospective employer with a résumé and cover letter. The cover letter should be one typewritten page. Use the first paragraph to introduce yourself; in the second paragraph, explain why you want to work for this particular company. Detail the skills and assets you can bring to the job. In the final paragraph, thank the addressee for considering your application.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dress appropriately for your interview. An oversight like scuffed shoes—even if the rest of your outfit dazzles—might demonstrate that you are not detail-oriented.
  • Customize your cover letter and résumé for each job application.
  • Make sure the health-care providers to which you apply are reputable.
