With over 7 million acres of wilderness, Alaska's Gates of the Arctic National Park is one of the most beautiful spots for camping in the United States. Here are tips for camping in this spectacular setting.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be prepared. You should have an expertise in outdoor survival skills. This remote area is not for novice campers.

  2. Step 2

Bring food and sleeping gear. There are no amenities.

  3. Step 3

Bring maps, compass and other hiking guides. You will not find any roads or trails in this area.

  4. Step 4

Dress warmly. The weather is often frigid in this locale, so bring cold weather gear.

  5. Step 5

Keep all food in sealed containers, away from your sleeping quarters. Both grizzly and black bears make their home here.

  6. Step 6

Bring binoculars. With 133 species of birds, you'll see eagles, owls, the northern shrike and falcons throughout the area.

  7. Step 7

If you would prefer to explore the park during day trips, BLM operates a campground that is open from June until mid-September. It is located at Dalton Highway Milepost 180, five miles north of Coldfoot.
