How to Go Camping at Cape Lookout National Seashore

Three miles off the coast of North Carolina are the islands of Cape Lookout National Seashore, with remote beaches, wild horses and historic districts. Surf-fishing, birding and shelling are popular activities here. Read on for more information on camping in this natural wonder.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Expect tent camping in its purest form. You will not find campgrounds or campsites. Water pumps and toilets are not available anywhere in the park.
Step2
Obtain a free camping permit from the visitor's center or self-serve permit station. There is a 14-day limit on each permit.
Step3
Prepare carefully and bring everything you need with you. There are no stores in the park.
Step4
Carry out all trash.

Tips & Warnings

  • No more than 2 gallons of shells per day may be taken off the seashore.
  • Swim at your own risk and beware of rip currents.
