How to Go Camping at Fire Island National Seashore

Get away from the hustle and bustle of New York city life on the Fire Island National Seashore. Its high dunes, maritime forests, historic landmarks and nature trails offer plenty of opportunities for hiking, canoeing, boating, fishing and catching glimpses of wildlife.       Make a reservation for Watch Hill Campground or Watch Hill Group Campsite (which one you choose depends on whether you have a big group). Both are open mid-May through mid-October. Call (631) 567-6664 for registration information.

      Plan to take a ferry or private boat to get to the campsites, which are located a 1/4-mile walk from the ferry dock. They are within walking distance to the beach, bathhouses, visitor center, general store and trails.

      Wilderness (backcountry) camping is open year-round in the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness area. Backcountry camping permits are available on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Watch Hill Visitor Center when Watch Hill Campground is open. Or, if you will be wilderness camping in the off-season, obtain the camping permit from the Wilderness Visitor Center mid-May through December when an employee is present.

Tips & Warnings

  • Watch Hill Campground has one group site and 26 individual tent sites. The Watch Hill Group Campground has one group campsite that will hold up to 40 people.

  • If you opt for backcountry camping in the summer, be prepared to encounter ticks, mosquitoes and intense heat. The best times for backcountry camping in this area are late fall and early spring.
