How to Treat Flea Bites

Everyone knows that fleas bite and torment pets. But fleas don't just bite animals; they can affect their owners as well. Here's what to do if you have been bitten.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Wash the area of the flea bite in hot soapy water s soon as possible.

  2. Step 2

    Scrub the area with a washcloth, which will help remove other fleas that might be on your skin in the area where you were bitten.

  3. Step 3

    Relieve minor swelling by icing the area: Apply ice for 10 minutes; remove it for 10 minutes; apply again if necessary.

  4. Step 4

    Apply hydrocortisone cream to the area of the bite to relieve itching if necessary.

  5. Step 5

    Take an oral antihistamine if you're still itchy, which will reduce the allergic reaction that your body is having to the bite.

Tips & Warnings
  • Flea bites are far more likely to cause itching than pain.
  • While most people do not have a severe reaction to flea bites, some people will. If you or someone else has a severe reaction that includes swelling of the face or tightness in the throat, consult a doctor right away.
