Mosquito bites are more annoying than harmful, but there are steps you can take to prevent them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep mosquitoes from biting by using a DEET-based insect repellent. Spray the repellent on exposed skin and mosquitoes will be less likely to land or bite.

  2. Step 2

Buy clothing that has been pre-treated with Permethrin. Or buy Permethrin spray and treat your own clothing.

  3. Step 3

Choose light colors such as tan, olive or white. Mosquitoes are less attracted to these colors.

  4. Step 4

Avoid wearing fragrances such as perfumes and body lotions. These can attract mosquitoes.

  5. Step 5

Avoid standing water. It attracts mosquitoes.

  6. Step 6

Take extra precautions to prevent mosquito bites during the times when mosquitoes are at their peak: dusk and dawn.

Tips & Warnings
  • Citronella candles can help keep mosquitoes out of an area, but don't rely on them. Wind can dissipate the smoke and smell quickly.
  • Mosquitoes can transmit West Nile Virus and other severe infections.
  • DEET-based sprays should be used very cautiously with children.
  • Don't apply insect repellent underneath clothing, only on exposed skin.
