Billbugs are problems common to dry areas, such as the drier parts of the Pacific Northwest. The little beetles are insects known as weevils. They have snouts that point down, and the grubs can severly damage a lawn. Follow this procedure to identify billbugs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for a beetle that is up to 1 inch long.

  2. Step 2

Look for an insect that does not fly but can crawl a long way.

  3. Step 3

Unfortunately, their color will not help distinguish them from other beetles. Billbugs can come in a variety of colors.

  4. Step 4

In the grub cycle of a billbug's life, it is white with a dark head and does not have legs.

  5. Step 5

Look for frass in your lawn. Frass is the billbug's excrement that resembles sawdust.

  6. Step 6

A moderate infestation of billbugs is classified as the location of more than six to eight billbugs in a five minute time span. If you have identified this many billbugs, it is time to take action.
