Natural insect repellents often seem like a good idea. DEET-based insect repellents carry a number of warnings, particularly about use with children. But do you know how to choose a natural insect repellent?

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider why you are looking for a natural insect repellent. Is it because you have heard the warnings about DEET-based repellents and you don't want to take your chances or is it because you have not had the time to do your research to understand DEET-based repellents?

  2. Step 2

There are a number of options available to you. Many of them involve using plant essential oils such as citronella, eucalyptus, cedar, peppermint and others.

  3. Step 3

Understand that these essential oils are not made to repel mosquitoes or other insects; the oils confuse the mosquitoes by throwing them off of your natural scents.

  4. Step 4

Some scents will be more effective than others. One of the most effective natural insect repellents is citronella, in candles and in some newer skin products.

  5. Step 5

Don't like the smell of citronella? Both geranium oil and lemon eucalyptus oil have been shown to be effective at keeping mosquitoes at bay.

Tips & Warnings
  • The only way to know whether any insect repellent works--natural or otherwise--is to try it.
  • Natural insect repellents will need to be re-applied more often than DEET-based repellents.
  • Even though many natural insect repellents have shown some effectiveness, none has been shown to be as effective as using an insect repellent with DEET.
  • Citronella candles can be effective for keeping the mosquitoes at bay, but keep in mind the direction of the wind. The smoke can blow away easily.
  • Geranium oil is toxic if swallowed.
