Study a map of the route, so you can be sure not to miss anything. The train will make stops in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Jasper, among others. For the traveler who wishes to explore on foot, the train will stop independent of a station between Sudbury Junction and Winnipeg.

Be ready for delays in the winter. The Toronto to Vancouver rail is well used and travels through only moderately cold areas of Canada. That said, rain and snow are extremely likely on the path, and can cause delays if heavy enough.

Take into consideration when you book your travel that the trip takes three days. You can depart Toronto on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday morning, and arrive in Vancouver on Friday, Sunday or Tuesday morning.

Decide which class you want to travel: Comfort class is the economical choice, costing about $580 Canadian. Silver & Blue class includes a bed and access to the Park car, a sightseeing area of the train with 360-degree views, and starts at about $1,000 Canadian for the least expensive of the five levels. There is also a 'Romance by Rail' package, complete with private suite, chocolates and champagne.

Travel during the off-peak period, between late October and the end of May. This will save you money, and the weather will likely not be below 5 degrees F.

Refer to train company literature about connecting rails. The Toronto to Vancouver route is so expansive that from it, a traveler could connect to most major train stations in Canada and the northern United States with one transfer.

Take advantage of special discount rates for seniors, students over 18, students under 18, and children under 12. The savings can be considerable, so be sure to investigate your options thoroughly. Keep in mind the Canrailpass, which allows unlimited train travel in Canada for a low price.
