Book the K24 train for regular service into Beijing. It leaves at 8 a.m. on Thursdays and Fridays. The Friday train is active between the months of June and September.

Consider the #216 train as an alternative during the busy summer season if tickets for the K24 train are sold out. This train runs in June, July and August. It stops in Jinen where you can take a connecting train to Beijing.

Expect to board the #216 at about 7 p.m. on a Monday or Friday.

Note that the K24 train has a summer and winter schedule. In summer it departs at 8 a.m. to arrive in China the following day at about 3 p.m.

Decide on your preferred class of travel on the K24 train. Choose deluxe, upgraded second class or standard second class.

Be aware that the #216 train only offers the standard second class.

Contact a travel agency to book your ticket or make your purchase from a ticket office. There are ticket offices dedicated to foreigners in the bigger Mongolian cities.

Take note of when train tickets become available. Tickets for the luxurious Z train are available 10 days ahead of its schedule while tickets for the other trains are available about 3 days before travel.

Research visa requirements for China. Some nationals going through Shanghai, do not need visas if they will be in Shanghai less than 48 hours. There are different visa requirements for Hong Kong and Macao. Contact your local embassy for more information.

Ensure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months.

Prepare to stop at Jinen around 12 p.m. the next day if you are taking the number 216 train.

Take the connecting #90 train from Jinen at about 11 p.m. The train will arrive in Beijing the following morning at about 7 a.m.
