Step 1
Choose from the direct route or the indirect route. The Sunset Limited offers direct service between Los Angeles and Houston 3 days a week. It takes just over 37 hours. The indirect route on the Southwest Chief, Texas Eagle and 2 bus transfers takes over 60 hours.

Step 2
Search for itineraries and make reservations at Amtrak's online reservation center on its Web site. A quick and user-friendly process, you will be able to book tickets, apply discounts and learn about Amtrak policies in minutes.
-
Step 1
Use Quick-Trak ticketing kiosks at Los Angeles Union Station to pick up your tickets fast. Like self-service check-in at the airport, you just insert your credit card to activate this machine. Enter your reservation number and your ticket will be printed out.
-
Step 2
Visit a manned Amtrak station desk to pick up tickets from an Amtrak employee. If you are checking baggage, you can also do that at the same time. At manned stations you can pay with cash, check or credit card for your ticket.
-
Step 3
Have your ticket mailed to you if you don't think you will have time to check in or just want to have your ticket in hand when you arrive at the station. You must book tickets at least 10 days before you travel to receive them by mail. Amtrak only sends tickets to US mailing addresses. There is no fee for this service.
