Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access for making reservations.

Get the Best Price On Your Fare

  1. Step 1

Book tickets ASAP. The easiest way to save on train tickets is to book early. Tickets can go up as much as 40 percent at the last minute. Additionally, coach seats often sell out at peak times.

  2. Step 2

Check weekly and advertised specials. Amtrak's Web site (see below) posts all specials and you might find one that fits your needs at real savings.

  3. Step 3

Look out for discounts. Amtrak has a lot of discounts for seniors, students, military and AAA members. Before you book your ticket see if you qualify for any. These require a few days advance purchase, another reason not to wait to reserve your ticket.

  4. Step 4

Be Flexible. If you don't have hard and fast travel dates, search for tickets a few days before and a few days after your desired travel date. Often you will find significant savings this way.

  5. Know Your Itinerary

  6. Step 1

Be prepared for stops. After leaving Los Angeles, the Southwest Chief services 32 different stations in eight states. Most of the stops are quick and you are not permitted to get off the train.

  7. Step 2

Fall asleep in Mountain Time, wake up in Central Time. Fall asleep as you leave the Colorado Rockies and western Kansas, then wake up as you pull into Kansas City, Kansas.

  8. Step 3

Relax and take in the majestic southwestern views from the huge windows on the train.

  9. Step 4

Cross the Mojave Desert at night, an early part of the trip as you leave Los Angeles.

Tips & Warnings
  • Albuquerque is usually a rest stop for the Southwest Chief. There you will have the chance to stretch your legs and shop in the station where Native American vendors often set up stands.
  • Don't forget to change your watch to Central Time when you get off the train in Chicago.
