Los Angeles stirs the national imagination like no other city, thanks in large part to Hollywood. If you want to see the beaches and become a star, here's where it all begins. But driving to L.A. can be a hassle, and the less said about Los Angeles International Airport, the better. Why not take the train? It's easy, inexpensive and fun!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer with internet access.
  1. Step 1

Call Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL or visit Amtrak's web site in the "Resources" section below. On the web site, you can book your train reservations via Amtrak's Fare Finder. You can also navigate the site if you have a PDA, Blackberry or other handheld device.

  2. Step 2

If you ordered your tickets online or by phone, pick them up at a ticket agent or at one of the Quik-Trak kiosks that can be found at many Amtrak locations (you'll need to enter your reservation number). If you've booked your trip far in advance, you can also request that your tickets be mailed to you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some of the routes here involve a bus to get you to the train. Be prepared.
  • It's a longer trip than if you were to drive it (depending on traffic), so plan accordingly.
  • On any route involving the Pacific Surfliner train, your seat is unreserved unless you pay a small fee and upgrade to business-class seating. If you don't want to upgrade, show up as early as possible to guarantee a seat.
  • If your San Luis Obispo departure date is less than 24 hours away, you may not be able to book online.
