With Amtrak tickets starting at around $25 each way, journeying by train from Port Huron to Chicago is cheap and easy. Here's how to go about it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A computer with internet access.

Step1
Call Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL or visit Amtrak's web site in the "Resources" section below. On the web site, you can book your train reservations via Amtrak's Fare Finder. You can also navigate the site if you have a PDA, Blackberry or other handheld device.
Step2
If you ordered your tickets online or by phone, pick them up at a ticket agent or at one of the Quik-Trak kiosks that can be found at many Amtrak locations (you'll need to enter your reservation number). If you've booked your trip far in advance, you can also request that your tickets be mailed to you.
Step3
Prepare yourself for Chicago's Union Station. Several times the size of Port Huron's station, Union Station is a major hub with several trains arriving and departing at any given time. If you are having a friend pick you up, plan in detail where you will meet, or carry your cell phone with you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reserve your ticket as far in advance as possible. Chicago is a popular vacation destination during the summer months, as well as over the holidays; take advantage of Amtrak's option to book up to 11 months in advance to avoid disappointment.
  • Watch your bags at Union Station in Chicago. This bustling hub is easily accessible and filled with travelers, making it a perfect area for pickpockets.
