How to Book Train Travel From Charlotte, NC To New York

It's a long journey from Charlotte to New York via Amtrak. The Amtrak station in Charlotte is just a mile and a half outside of downtown, so catch a cab and check out the sights before continuing on to the Big Apple.

1. Call Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL or visit Amtrak's web site in the "Resources" section below. On the web site, you can book your train reservations via Amtrak's Fare Finder. You can also navigate the site if you have a PDA, Blackberry or other handheld device.

2. If you ordered your tickets online or by phone, pick them up at a ticket agent or at one of the Quik-Trak kiosks that can be found at many Amtrak locations (you'll need to enter your reservation number). If you've booked your trip far in advance, you can also request that your tickets be mailed to you.

Tips & Warnings

• Direct trips are available if you book far enough in advance.

• Check Service Alerts and News at the Amtrak site before your trip for possible delays.

• Bring a photo identification for possible verification checks at the station.

• Direct trips are about 12 hours in duration. Bring something to kill the time and to make your journey more enjoyable--books, magazines and MP3 players are good bets.

• You cannot smoke on most Amtrak trains.
