Book Your Train Travel From Bratislava to Venice

  1. Step 1

Buy your ticket in Bratislava. You should be able to pay with most major credit cards, but bring your guidebook in case you can't find an attendant who speaks English. A few phrases in Slovak can speed your reservation.

  2. Step 2

Book your tickets through Austria on your way to Venice, Italy. You'll get to see amazing mountain scenery.

  3. Step 3

Buy a ticket on a EuroCity or InterCity train for more comfortable seats and modern interiors.

  4. Step 4

Purchase a Eurail Selectpass to travel through 3, 4 or 5 bordering countries. While Slovakia is not included in this ticket from Rail Europe, it is useful for European tours (see website below).

  5. Ride the Train From Bratislava to Venice

  6. Step 1

Take a detour: book a train to Vienna and head towards St. Poelton. There you can catch the Mariazell Railway, which is perfect for spectacular mountain views.

  7. Step 2

Enjoy your trip to Venice, which takes around 8 or 9 hours.

  8. Step 3

Travel by night in a sleeper car or couchette. A sleeper car comes with compartments for 1, 2, 3 or 4 people, while a couchette has 4 to 6 bunks per compartment.

  9. Plan Your Transportation From the Venice Train Station

  10. Step 1

Walk from the main terrace near Venezia Santa Lucia. You will see water taxis to take you along the Grand Canal.

  11. Step 2

Disembark from your train at Venezia Mestre and catch a local train into the heart of Venice.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring a map if you arrive at either of the main train stations in Venice, Venezia Mestre or Venezia Santa Lucia. The city may seem a bit difficult to navigate when you first arrive.
  • If you arrive at Venizia Santa Lucia with a large amount of luggage, you can follow a ramp which leads directly to the canal. You can avoid the station entirely if you have some Euros on hand to pay for transport in your water taxi.
