Baku stands on the shoulders of thousands of years of history, whether it was a place to rest along the Silk Road, or it was a battleground for the many different factions that contested its allegiance. Today Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan and the seat of that nation's government. It's a difficult country to neatly describe because of its diversity, which is what makes it such a great place to visit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • A computer with internet access in order to book accommodations online.
  • A valid passport from your nation of origin and all appropriate visas.

Choose a Great Luxury Hotel in Baku

Step1
To book accommodations, contact Azerbaijan Tourism or visit the Web site (see Resources below). Book your luxury accommodations early for the Azerbaijan Jazz Festival, held once a year. People from around central Asia and Europe flock to hear local and international artists, so rooms can fill up pretty quick.
Step2
Visit Baku during the winter months (October to March) and get a discount on accommodations. Many hotels are far less expensive during this time, and you can get great rooms for less than $130 per night.
Step3
Sleep near the Republic Palace when you're in town for concerts. The Republic Palace is the premier music venue in the city.

Get in and around Baku

Step1
Fly into Baku from Russia for the easiest entry into the country. More flights to Azerbaijan originate in Russian cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg than anywhere else.
Step2
Step out of your hotel and walk wherever you want to go in Baku. Many great attractions like the the Capital Nightclub or Fountain Square are within walking distance of several great luxury hotels.
Step3
Chater a boat in Baku to take you out across the Caspian to Turkmenistan. Several tourist destinations are located just across the water.

Explore Baku and Azerbaijan

Step1
Take a trip to the Akhundov National Library, one of the premier libraries in Europe and central Asia. Thousands of volumes, many dealing with Azerbaijani history are within its walls.
Step2
Leave Baku behind and find accommodations along the coast of the Caspian Sea. Many luxury hotels dot the shores of the sea, and room rates are rarely about $200 per night.
Step3
Explore the rest of the Apsheron Peninsula to see a multitude of ancient and medieval history. Several incredible castles still stand in the region, and many tours offer hotel accommodations nearby the most prominent stops.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you travel outside Baku, be sure to avoid the Nagorno-Karabakh region. This section of the country is involved in a dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan and should be considered dangerous.
  • Avoid the Armenian border while you're in Azerbaijan in general. Tensions between the two nations are high and thus the border is closed.
  • Keep up to date on the health situation in Azerbaijan. Several illnesses are known to be concerns in the country, including malaria, diphtheria, and yellow fever.
